On January 11, 2024, Quaker Oats announced that they have expanded a recall from December 15, 2023 to include more cereals, bars and snacks. This recall now includes some WIC-approved cereals. The reason for the recall is that some products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacteria that can make people very sick, especially kids, older people, and those with weaker immune systems. To keep everyone safe, these products have been recalled across the county and are no longer on store shelves.

The following WIC-approved Quaker Oatmeal cereals with “Best Before” Dates Between: January 11, 2024 and October 1, 2024 have been recalled:

Quaker Oatmeal Squares Cinnamon.
- Size 14.5 oz and UPC 030000061534.
- Size 21 oz and UPC 030000320730.
- Size 43.5 oz (3 pack) and UPC 030000577707 OR 030000566497.
Quaker Oatmeal Squares Brown Sugar.
- Size 14.5 oz and UPC 030000064412.
- Size 21 oz and UPC 030000064030.
- Size 29 oz (2 count) and UPC 030000440612.
- Size 43.5 oz (3 pack) and UPC 030000566480.
Quaker Oatmeal Squares Honey Nut.

What to do if you have a recalled product?

Check the SmartLabel QR Code:
- Scan the SmartLabel QR code on the product package to find out if it has been recalled. Follow the instructions on how to use SmartLabel.
If You Have a Recalled Product:
- Do not eat it and throw it away.
- Contact Quaker Consumer Relations at 1-800-492-9322 (9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday) or visit www.QuakerRecallUSA.com to submit a claim online. Quaker Oat will provide you with a replacement coupon to use at the store.
Watch for Symptoms and Contact Your Doctor:
- If you or your child have eaten a recalled product and experienced any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor:
  - Bloody diarrhea or diarrhea that lasts more than three days without improving.
  - Diarrhea and a fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit.
  - Nausea and vomiting, especially if it’s hard to keep liquids down.
  - Signs of dehydration like dry mouth and throat, infrequent peeing and feeling dizzy when standing up.
  - Stomach cramps.

Good news! The government was able to come to an agreement and avoid a shutdown. You can continue to use your eWIC card to purchase WIC foods.

As the federal COVID-19 public health emergency has ended, the USDA flexibilities that have allowed Colorado WIC to provide all services remotely (by phone) are ending on September 30, 2023. Due to this, some WIC appointments may need to be completed in person but WIC will continue to offer phone and online appointments whenever possible.

What’s changing?

Starting October 1, 2023, WIC will once again need to gather participants’ growth measurements (heights and weights) and hemoglobin levels at enrollment and re-enrollment appointments.
WIC can accept growth measurements (must be within the last 60 days) and hemoglobin levels taken by a doctor or community health program. If this information is available, the participant may be able to complete their appointment by phone instead of in person.

What does this mean for families participating on WIC?

Many WIC appointments can still be done over the phone or online. There will be times, at least once a year, when WIC will need to assess you or your child’s growth and hemoglobin levels to help us partner with you to provide personalized nutrition services.

If you and/or your child have recent growth measurements (height and weight) and a hemoglobin level taken by a doctor or a community health program, then you may be able to complete the enrollment (or re-enrollment) appointment by phone.
If this information is not available, the enrollment or re-enrollment appointment to determine program eligibility will need to be completed in person.

Why does WIC need heights, weights, and hemoglobin levels?

WIC is a health and nutrition program and growth measurements are an important sign of health and nutritional well-being. During your appointment, WIC will gather these measurements and let you know how your child is growing on their growth chart or where you are on your pregnancy weight gain grid.
WIC can also let you know if your hemoglobin level is low or at a healthy level. If your hemoglobin level is low, WIC can talk to you about iron rich foods that will improve your hemoglobin level.

What if a participant needs to change WIC clinic locations?

Use the Find My Clinic to find the WIC clinic closest to you. Call the clinic you’d like to be seen at to schedule your next appointment.
